Drinks to stay cool in summer
Buttermilk, coconut water, nimbu pani: simple Indian drinks that keep you cool and well on hot days.

On a hot day, your body loses a lot of water through sweat. Plain water is the best drink, but our kitchens have many simple, cooling drinks that help too.
Cool, healthy drinks
Buttermilk (chaas). Light, cooling and good for your stomach. Add a pinch of salt, cumin and coriander.
Coconut water. Natural and refreshing. Great after sweating a lot.
Nimbu pani. Lemon, water, a pinch of salt and a little sugar or honey.
Sattu drink. Roasted gram flour in cold water. Filling and cooling.
Jaljeera. Cumin, mint and lemon. Tangy and refreshing.
Water with fruit. Add slices of cucumber, lemon or mint to plain water.
Drinks to have less of
- Cold drinks and sodas: lots of sugar.
- Packaged juices: often more sugar than fruit.
- Too much tea and coffee.
- Alcohol: it dries you out.
