What is Abhyangam oil massage?

A warm oil massage from Ayurveda: how it feels and who it suits.

· 2 min read

Abhyangam is a full-body massage with warm herbal oil. It comes from Ayurveda, the old Indian way of healing. It is slow, gentle and very relaxing.

How it feels

The therapist warms the oil and uses plenty of it. They use long, slow strokes on your arms and legs, and small circles around the joints. The pressure is gentle. Many people fall asleep.

You will feel oily after. That is normal: the oil softens your skin. A warm shower at the spa washes off the extra. Abhyangam is 60 or 90 minutes.

Why people love it

  • It is very relaxing and calms a busy mind.
  • It leaves the skin soft, especially in dry weather.
  • Many people sleep better that night.
  • It is gentle, so it suits people who don't like strong pressure.

Good to know

Wear old clothes for the trip home, in case a little oil is left. Tell your therapist about any skin allergy. If you are pregnant or unwell, ask your doctor first.
