Tired after a long drive? Try this

A stiff back and heavy legs after a road trip? Simple ways to feel better.

· 2 min read

A weekend trip from Bengaluru to Mysuru, Coorg or Ooty is great fun. The long drive home is not. By the time you park, your back is stiff, your legs are heavy and your eyes are tired.

On the road

  • Stop every two hours. Walk around and stretch.
  • Set your seat so your lower back is supported.
  • Keep water in the car and drink often.
  • Share the driving if you can.
  • Eat light snacks. Heavy food makes you sleepy.

When you get home

Walk first. Walk around for five minutes before you sit down.

Stretch. Bend forward gently, move your hips in circles, and lean back a little.

Take a warm shower. Warm water relaxes tight muscles.

Raise your legs. Lie down with your legs on a pillow for 10 minutes.

Sleep early. Driving tires your mind as well as your body.

The day after

Still stiff? A deep tissue massage can loosen the knots from long hours at the wheel. A Jacuzzi bath relaxes the whole body in warm water. If one leg is painful or swollen after a long trip, see a doctor.
